In 2007, a groundbreaking article, "Soil Degradation and Human Health," by David Pimentel and colleagues, exposed a startling truth: the decline of our soil is directly harming human health. Published in EcoHealth, the research uncovered how poor soil quality not only compromises water and food safety but also increases the risk of disease spread. By 2015, the crisis had escalated. Timothy D. Searchinger's study, "Global Health Impacts of Soil Degradation," published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, revealed the devastating effects on food production and nutrition. The research warned that the decline in soil health could have catastrophic consequences for human life, urging immediate global action.

Calcium: The Relationship with Physiological Disorders in Durian
According to the Department of Crop Production's statistics for 2024, Vietnam cultivates 150,787 hectares of durian, yielding 1,196,000 tons. In addition to pest damage, the occurrence of physiological disorders in fruit flesh significantly reduces the commercial value of durian. Nutrient management, particularly the roles of Ca, Mg, and K, greatly influences these disorders. Calcium in soil solution is absorbed by plants through the xylem during transpiration. Consequently, weather factors influencing transpiration, such as extreme temperatures, drought, or prolonged rainfall, can impact calcium absorption and supply. Within the plant, calcium exhibits low mobility, thus not relocating from older to younger tissues, commonly causing deficiencies in developing tissues during growth, flowering, fruit set and fruit development stages. Calcium deficiency can lead to flower drop, reduced fruit set, increased fruit drop, and particularly physiological disorders of flesh such as hardness, discoloration, and translucency. Foliar application of 0.2% Ca(NO3)2 two months after fruit set, followed by 0.2% MgSO4 after 15 days, and 1% KNO3 one month before harvest has proven effective in reducing the incidence of physiological disorders in Monthong durian.
