Off-Season Durian Cultivation and Growing Technique

The determining factor for durian flowering is water stress. Under natural conditions, durian in Vietnam flowers from December to January, harvested from April to May in the Mekong Delta, flowers from January to February, harvested from May to July in the Southeast and flowers from April to May, harvested from August to October in the Central Highlands. However, in the Mekong Delta, due to the application of off-season flowering treatment techniques, farmers can harvest from November to March of the following year. The techniques to induce flowering including: Creating ‘water stress’ by tightening water, draining water in ditches until dry, covering the surface of the bed with nylon net to prevent rainwater from seeping into the root zone; using fertilizers both soil application and foliar spraying with high phosphorus and potassium ratios, low nitrogen to help the plant form flower buds; Spray paclobutrazol on leaves, stems and branches at a concentration of 1,000-1,500 ppm. To get high yields and low ratio of physiological disorder symptons in different climate conditions, farmers must strictly manage fertilizers, growth stimulants, and water management according to each growth stage.
